Mount Baldy- San Antonio Mountains

Mount Baldy, California

Description

Added by Caitlin Morrison

Gorgeous Views, easy way to get out of the city, make sure to look up Groupons beforehand to find stellar deals to eat at the base restaurant/ski lift pass.

Mt.Baldy is a mountain located in the San Antonio Mountains, in close proximity to Los Angeles and Orange County area. In Winter season this area is a ski slope with a few different runs, but when the snow isn't coming down it is an epic hiking location.

Drive from CA-57 N and CA-210 E/Foothill Fwy to Claremont. Take the exit toward Base Line Rd from CA-210 E/Foothill Fwy. Drive to Mt.Baldy Road. Really pleasant drive overall the last mile or so is a bit windy--but again this is short-lived.

From there you will be at the base of Mt.Baldy, go inside the building next to the ski lift to pick up a parking pass, then either hike the 4 miles to the Top-of-the-Notch restaurant(a steep climb) or save some time and take the scenic chairlift option.

Once at the top pick up a map from the lodge to scope out which trail will best suit your capabilities. One of the most popular being the devil's backbone trail---the name given as it looks as if you truly do hike up the backbone of the mountain. The benefit to this is that on a clear day you can look right and see out to the ocean (Catalina on a high visibility day) and to your right and see San Gorgonio on the other.

Also a fun fact to note that Mount Baldy is the highest point in Los Angeles, so breathe deeply, and enjoy that view!
