Nice hike up to a fire tower giving you views of both Virginia and West Virginia! There were a pair of fawns at the top that were playing with each and completely startled us (not to mention our dogs).

We really enjoyed this hike. It’s fairly steep with lots of switchbacks and you’re in the trees all the way up, but there are great views from the top. Some trails apps indicate that you are done when you get to the first opening (which does have great views), but you will see the fire tower from that vantage point. It is another half mile to the tower (which is labeled as a private residence), but it is worth it as you get extensive view back into the park (including a good view of Mount Saint Nicholas )!

I understand why previous comments have mentioned other surrounding hikes as potential alternatives to this hike, but I was pleasantly surprised. It’s a nice gradual climb with a wide trail and lots of flowers and butterflies along the way. The radio tower on the top was a bit of an eyesore, but there are rock formations that allow you to get a good view of some of the neighboring mountains. Even without exploring the rock formations, you are afforded good views of both sides of the mountain. From the summit, you are able to see Big House Mountain, the Priest, and Flat Top Mountain just to name a few.
