Probably the best underrated and family friendly hike on Kauai. Cool and easy out-and back-hike that leads to a great overlook of the Waimea Canyon and then to the top of Waipo'o Falls. It is neat to see such diversity of nature in one hike.
To begin your adventure first map your hike to the trailhead by going to the location I have attached. You can also map it by typing into Google Maps "New Spur Trail" or "Waipo'o Falls." This will take you to a parking lot near Puu Hinahina Lookout. (Do not Map to the "Waipo'o Falls Trail"... this will take you to the wrong spot.. just type "Waipo'o Falls.")
When you get there take the trail with the sign that displays Canyon Trail on it. It is slightly confusing because on Google Maps it displays that you will be on the "New Spur Trail," but that trail is not listed on this sign. Rest assured, you will be on the right path and this trail feeds into the Canyon Trail.
Now... simply follow the trail. The trail is a bit hilly and can be muddy at the beginning... eventually you'll come to two forks in the road, but pay attention to the signs and they will let you know the right direction.
About 3/4 of the way you will come up on an overlook of the Waimea Canyon. The view is beautiful, and there is much red rock in the canyon as well as the trail. Take in the beauty and continue to the Falls when you're ready.
The next part of the hike to the falls is a bit steep. I would recommend shoes with aggressive tread and I would not want to do this in the rain. It is not near any drop offs or anything(unless you purposely go near them), so if you don't have aggressive hiking shoes it is still doable but you may slip and bust it a few times. (As my Father did while wearing 'street running' shoes with no tread haha... just go extra slow if this is the case)
Once you finish the remainder of the hike... make sure you check out BOTH FALLS. One of them is small and you will be at the BASE of the falls, the second is huge and you will be standing at the TOP of the falls. If you are athletic you can scramble down the right side to get a closer view of the falls and the amazing overlook it has.
If you do this you can also go to the middle and stand directly over where the water is falling. This is displayed in one of my attached photos. If you do this... BE CAREFUL. It isn't difficult to do, but if you slip you could easily fall all the way down to the base of the waterfall.
If that sounds too risky for you, then it is easily just as beautiful to observe it from a safe distance
