About this place

Added by Claudia Dennler

Gorgeous National Park in Southern Germany. Multiple levels of difficulty for any outdoor enthusiast. Two incredibly blue and clear lakes. Fresh milk and cheese served at multiple huts.

Berchtesgaden National Park is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. The pristine water, looming cliffs, and natural beauty perfectly complement one another (and the two main lakes Koenigssee and Obersee are even featured in the opening scenes of "The Sound of Music.") This is a great place for scenery, photos, light hiking, and delicious Alpen milk and cheese.

Tickets can be purchased to take the ferry across Koenigssee in Schönau am. Koenigssse. (This is the only way into the park unless backpacking in.) The first stop is at St. Bartholomew's church. The next stop is on the far end of Koenigssee, and from there, it's a short walk to Obersee, where a couple of picturesque old fishing sheds can be found. If you continue around the lake, you will find another small hut with fresh cheese and milk, a small beach for swimming, and a few paths extending onward for hiking.

Around the edge of Obersee, there are numerous places to stop and photograph the amazing scenes. If you make it on a clear day, the mountains and surrounding waterfalls will reflect perfectly on still water, and the water is so clear that sticks, branches, and fish can all be clearly seen. Note that there may be quite a line to take pictures with/of the old fishing huts.

In addition, if you follow the most prominent path, you will end up in a small valley (~800 meters) with beautiful cascading waterfalls coming from the cliffs above. You can find small paths leading upward that will allow you to get closer and to adventure up the sides for additional photo-ops.

To return, follow the path back and take the ferry back across the lake. Pay attention to closing times and note that on a busy days, you may be stuck at the St. Bartholomew church stop for up to 3-4 hours if you exit the boat.
