Description

This is a good but slippery hike about 40 minutes outside of Durango, CO near Purgatory Ski Resort to the base of Cascade Falls and the many ice caves near the river. s

Start driving from Durango towards Silverton in Highway 550. You will drive by Purgatory Ski Resort, followed by a very sharp curve. There is a parking lot to the right after the curve (so make sure you have a manageable speed to turn). The parking lot is full of snow so just follow the road and you will come to a trailhead on the side of the road. Follow the trailhead down, but be careful.. it's a slippey hike! There is a fork in the trail that goes down and that goes right. If you follow the way down it will take you to the river and the ice caves. The trail to the right take you along the side of the canyon and to the base of Cascade Falls.
