Description

Added by Joshua Little

This is a much less popular trek located about 1.5 hours south of Coyhaique inside the Aysen region of Chile. During the trek you will go over two summits with breathtaking views of the surrounding lakes and mountains near Cerro Castillo.

There are three different trailheads to choose from when hiking in the Cerro Castillo Mtn Range.

1. Laguna Chiguay Campground

2. Las Horquetas Grandes

3. Town of Villa Cerro Castillo

I began my treck off the Careterra Austral hwy (Las Horquetas Grandes) by hopping over a farmers fence and onto the trail. Don't be alarmed, he was very friendly and only told me to, "enjoy the trail, it's beautiful." There are a couple different option right when you begin the trek, a small campground (free) is located right next to a small river that allows you to get organized and spend a free night if you want to take a little more time. We carried on about two hours to a giant field that had cows ranging and a nice river to fly fish. Throughout the 3 or 4 night trek you will trek through two passes and get close to the Cerro Castillo summit of 8,776 feet!

*One thing I haven't mentioned in a lot of these South America adventures is that the days are VERY long. Most days the sun doesn't set until between 10-11pm, giving backpackers the opportunity to get a ton of distance done.

*Also the bus that will take you to Cerro Castillo is hard to find. We found two buses that departed everyday around 9-9:30 AM on the corner next to the UniMarc Grocery Store.
