Snowshoeing on Grouse Mountain in Vancouver: Snowshoe Grind and Thunderbird Ridge

North Vancouver, British Columbia

Description

Added by Danielle Leroux

Take the gondola up Grouse Mountain and you are quickly in a winter wonderland. Don't stop at the Snowshoe Grind, take the Discovery Loop for spectacular views from Thunderbird Ridge on a clear day.

BCMC Trail

To get to the top of Grouse Mountain and the snowshoe trails, you can take the gondola up (expensive if you don’t have an annual pass) or hike up the BCMC trail (1-1.5 hours). You will likely need spikes when hiking up the BCMC trail, but the trail is well-marked and generally not busy. Find the trail directions here.

Snowshoe Grind

With the Grouse Grind closed in the winter, Grouse Mountain created a snowshoeing alternative: the Snowshoe Grind. The trail starts not far from the chalet and takes approximately 1 hour roundtrip. It is a great workout and even better views. I love sliding down, bring a garbage bag with you to make sliding even easier! I have also done the snowshoe grind in spikes, which works well if the snow is packed down. Read more about the Snowshoe Grind here.

Discovery Loop and Thunderbird Ridge

If you want a longer hike, on the way up the Snowshoe Grind you will see a sign on the right for the Discovery Loop. I highly recommend it! The trail takes you out to Thunderbird Ridge and adds about 45 minutes. On a clear day, the views of Mount Baker, the surrounding mountains, and city below are incredible. Find the Grouse Mountain snowshoe trails map here.

Light Walk

One of my favourite evening activities is to hike up the BCMC trail (don’t forget a head lamp and a buddy) and visit the Light Walk at the top of Grouse Mountain. The short path opens at dusk and is beautiful. The trees are covered in twinkling lights and there are several light installations. You generally don’t need snowshoes or spikes to walk the path, but it may make things easier.
