Hike to Sunday Lake

Nipissing, Unorganized, South Part, Ontario

Description

Added by Ariella Burton

This is a really lovely 5km hike from the highway to Sunday Creek Access Point #10. It is best accessed during the summer months, but is still a lovely hike regardless of the season.Includes the option of a 200m portage for advanced skill levels and above. *Wouldn't recommend this portage for beginner canoe trippers.

Starting at the trail head for the Big Pines Interpretive Walking Trail, head up the pathway on the west end of the small parking lot. After about 2.5km on the road you will see the yellow flags in the tree on the right side indicating the start of the portage.

This portage is for advanced trippers and goes down a steep incline through the forest. It emerges into an absolutely beautiful circular clearing with access onto the water of Sunday Lake. This lake is gorgeous and isolated pretty much all-year round, and is a really scenic and peaceful trip in any season.

Note that in the winter months, access to this lake is incredibly difficult without proper equipment and shouldn't be attempted solo or by beginner trippers. Be careful not to damage the trees with your boat when going down the portage route, and watch out for deer and other wildlife along the sides of the road!
