Sage Trail and Stanley Peak Loop offers a rewarding 6.3-mile hiking adventure in Daley Ranch, Escondido. This moderately challenging loop trail climbs ~1,000 feet to panoramic views of the San Diego backcountry, the Pacific Ocean, and Palomar Mountain from Stanley Peak's 1,983-foot summit.

Trail Details:

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Time: 2-3 hours
  • Dogs: Allowed on leash
  • Parking: Free lot at Daley Ranch main entrance (La Honda Drive) | Additional parking is available at Dixon Lake for a fee of $5 on weekends and holidays
  • Fees/Permits: No entrance fee or permits required

The well-maintained trail begins at the main Daley Ranch parking lot, winding through coastal sage scrub and chaparral habitats. Spring brings vibrant wildflowers, while year-round hiking rewards visitors with sweeping valley vistas. The trail features several interpretive signs detailing local flora and ranch history.

Best hiked from October through May when temperatures are cooler. Summer hikers should start early, bring plenty of water, and expect hot conditions with limited shade. The trail intersection with Stanley Peak is clearly marked, though carrying a trail map is recommended for first-time visitors.

Facilities include restrooms at the parking lot and several benches along the trail. The path is popular with both hikers and mountain bikers, so trail etiquette and awareness are important, especially on weekends.
