Clevenger Canyon South West Trail located in San Diego is a moderately challenging 4.4-mile round-trip hike with expansive views of the San Pasqual Valley and surrounding peaks. Located near the northern edge of the Clevenger Canyon area, the trail takes you through open, exposed terrain with steady inclines and switchbacks. It is best hiked during cooler months to avoid heat exposure. The trailhead is easily accessible, and no special permits are required for day hikes. However, you’ll want to bring plenty of water and sun protection, as there is little shade along the route. Dogs are permitted on the trail but must be kept on a leash at all times.

The highlight of the hike is the unique set of chairs perched on top of a boulder about halfway through the trail. These chairs, which provide a quirky and comfortable resting point, have become iconic among hikers. While the exact history of the chairs remains unclear, they offer a great spot to rest and take in the panoramic views of the valley and nearby mountains, making for an excellent photo opportunity. Beyond the chairs, the trail continues upward, offering even more scenic views as you approach Peak 1635, the highest point of the hike.

In addition to offering stunning vistas, the South Clevenger Trail also allows hikers to witness the regeneration of the landscape following the 2018 Pasqual Fire. You’ll pass through areas where the vegetation is slowly recovering, including patches of Engelmann oak, which are native to the area. The trail also provides access to several other nearby hiking routes, making it a versatile option for those looking to explore more of the region’s outdoor offerings. For hikers seeking a peaceful escape with a mix of elevation gain and history, this trail is a must-visit.

Clevenger Canyon South West Trail Reviews

Beautiful hike on 11/3/24. Rained the night before, so it smelled amazing throughout the entire hike. Chairs are fun towards the end, but bring hand sanitizer bc the ropes to help you up and down are gross. New house being built near the end, their poor dog barked nonstop at us, even as we sat at the top having a snack.

Trail is great! Hiked on 24Sep2024 , trail is maintaned well. Not much shade. I recommend doing this in sunrise or before sunset. Epic chair at the end!
