Nestled along the coast just north of San Francisco, the town of Bolinas and the Azalea Hill Trail offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
One of my favorite trails in the area is the scenic Azalea Hill Trail leading to Cataract Falls.
To reach the trailhead, take Highway 1 north from San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge. After passing through Stinson Beach, turn left on Olema-Bolinas Road and follow it for about 10 miles until you reach downtown Bolinas. Turn right on Wharf Road, then left on Overlook Drive. The trailhead parking lot will be on your right.
Once at the trailhead, the hike begins in a shady forest of California bay laurels and tanbark oaks. Tiny woodland birds flit among the branches as sunlight filters through the leaves. After a gentle uphill climb, the trail opens up to sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and Bolinas Lagoon below. To the east, rolling golden hills stretch as far as the eye can see.
Continuing along the moderately challenging 5-mile loop trail, you'll pass tranquil ponds and trickling creeks lined with bright green horsetails. By mid-spring, vibrant pink and white blossoms adorn the native azaleas scattered throughout the hillside. With some luck, you may even spot black-tailed deer grazing in the tall grasses.
The highlight of the hike is Cataract Falls, a delicate 25-foot waterfall cascading down weathered rock ledges. Moss-covered boulders around the base of the falls provide the perfect perch for a snack or some photos. Early mornings are ideal for capturing the falls with your camera, before the light harshly illuminates this shaded forest glen.
After relaxing at the falls, the trail loops back through peaceful meadows filled with lupine, poppies, and other native wildflowers. For me, the Azalea Hill Trail encapsulates the natural beauty and serenity that first drew me to Bolinas years ago. The landscape never ceases to rejuvenate my spirit.
