Caliente Mountain Ridge Trail, located in Santa Margarita, California, is a challenging hike that stretches over 16.73 miles. The trail is known for its high elevation gain of 1,850 feet, making it a demanding trek for seasoned hikers. The trailhead starts at Selby Campground and winds its way up to the highest point in San Luis Obispo County. The trail offers a variety of landscapes, from chaparral-covered slopes to oak woodlands. The most notable feature is the panoramic view from the summit, where hikers can see the Carrizo Plain National Monument and the Pacific Ocean on clear days. The trail is best hiked from October to May when the weather is cooler. Hikers should bring plenty of water as there are no water sources along the trail. It's also recommended to start early in the day to avoid the afternoon heat and to have enough time to complete the hike before dark. Parking is available at the trailhead, and there are no fees to hike the trail. However, there are no nearby accommodations, so plan accordingly.

Photograph Wildflowers at Carrizo Plain National Monument
Driving in from Hwy 58 East, you will be passing through a grapevine, and through some hills. Once you hit the Seven Mile Road, you will start to see fields of yellow flowers all around you - this is where the adventure starts. Just continue to drive along the road until you find a great spot to take photos of the wildflowers.
Continue along Seven Mile Road, until you hit Soda Lake Road, then ...
Backpack Zaca Ridge
From Santa Ynez, CA take Armour Rd until it hits Happy Canyon Rd, and make a left. Follow this scenic drive through vineyards and oak shaded pastures into the Angeles National Forest. A half-mile section of asphalt is rough from winter storms, so drive slow. The road becomes Sunset Valley Rd and narrows to 1 lane. Drive 3.8 miles to the first road on the left past the Davy Brown Campground. Thi...
Dispersed Camp in Los Padres National Forest (near Davy Brown Campground)
I was looking for a last minute adventure out of LA and found this epic view.
Easy backpacking trip for one night, no permits needed, less than 3.5 hours from LA, and secluded.
Go to REI and pick up your adventure pass for your car. Plug into your GPS "Davy Brown Campground" in Los Olivos / Los Padres National Forrest. Drive past Davy Brown Campground and within less than a 1/4 mile, make a l...
Bike Foxen Canyon Road
Foxen Canyon Road from Santa Maria to Los Olivos runs through some of the most beautiful wine country in Santa Barbara county so much so that it was centerpiece of the film Sideways.
The road itself begins at the intersection of Betteravia and Philbric roads just east of Santa Maria and proceeds for roughly 30 miles southeast through Santa Maria Valley before turning south into Foxen Canyon its...
Trail Run, Hike, or Mountain Bike Los Flores Ranch Park
I'm a sucker for a good ridgeline trail, and Los Flores Ranch Park has lots of them.
For a solid 5ish mile loop with about 600 ft of elevation gain, take the Manzanita Trail to the Ridge Top Trail for sweeping views of the valley, vineyards, and out to the ocean on a clear day. The Solomon Trail is a super fun single track that will wind you back down to the Visitor Center. I came in the spring...
Cycle the Palmer and Cat Canyon Roads in Santa Maria Valley
You can't go wrong with cycling around the Santa Maria Valley area. There is an abundance of interesting roads to ride along with scenic hills meandering through wineries.
I started my ride at the Los Flores Ranch Park parking lot and headed east along Dominion. Take a right on Palmer and follow it down to the 101. Ride south along the 101 for about a mile until you reach Cat Canyon Road. (The...
