Barnett Ranch Preserve in Ramona, California, offers a variety of hiking trails suitable for all levels of fitness. The preserve spans over 728 acres, providing ample space for outdoor activities. The main trail, a 3.84-mile loop, is moderately challenging with a few steep inclines and declines. It is well-marked and maintained, making it suitable for beginners and seasoned hikers alike. The trail features a variety of natural landmarks. The first mile takes you through a valley dotted with oak trees and native shrubs. As you ascend, you'll come across a large boulder formation, a popular spot for a quick rest and photo opportunity. The trail then winds down to a small creek, which can be crossed via stepping stones. The preserve is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, coyotes, and numerous bird species. Birdwatchers will appreciate the abundance of red-tailed hawks and western bluebirds. Hikers are advised to carry water, wear sturdy shoes, and keep a safe distance from wildlife. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash at all times. The preserve is open from sunrise to sunset, and parking is available at the trailhead.
