Easily accessible and a great day trip!
Mt Laguna is a hidden gem that my roommate and I discovered a little over a year ago. It is only a 45 min drive out of San Diego and gets up over 5,000 ft which means snow in the winter! We went up for a day trip of playing in the snow and some sledding. It was an easy drive up there that but they did have chain control even though the roads were very clear. You take the sunrise highway all the way there which is a very easy drive with great views i might add.
We kept driving on the highway and pulled off to the side where there was plenty of room to park and starting hitting the hills to sled down. The powered was fresh as a storm had just unleashed about a 12 in. of snow the night before. The hills were perfect as well! Not too steep, but just enough to get you going pretty fast. It can get a bit windy up there so be sure to bring a coat that is waterproof and wind resistant.
After we had finished sledding we kept on drive down the Sunrise Highway and ran into Highway 79 which goes right past Lake Cuyamaca which is where the photo of the field was taken. We followed 79 all the way back to interstate 8 which we took all the way home.
It was a fun and easy day trip. I would highly recommend going here for some winter fun, but also a fantastic place to camp during the warmer months.
