The North Plateau, Mountain Mist, Logan Point, and McKay Hollow Loop in Monte Sano State Park is one of Alabama's hidden gems. This spectacular loop trail offers hikers a diverse wilderness experience combining stunning vistas, challenging terrain, and the peaceful serenity of Appalachian foothills.

Trail Highlights

  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
  • Duration: 4-5 hours
  • Best Seasons: Spring and Fall

The Perfect Hiking Experience

This signature loop combines four of Monte Sano's most beloved trails into one unforgettable hiking adventure. Beginning on the gentle North Plateau Trail, hikers enjoy a relatively flat path surrounded by towering hardwoods and seasonal wildflowers.

As you transition to the Mountain Mist Trail, expect dramatic limestone bluffs and breathtaking panoramic views of the Tennessee Valley below. This section is especially stunning during fall when the valley erupts in a tapestry of autumn colors.

Logan Point offers one of the park's premier overlooks – a perfect spot for photographs or a short rest before tackling the more challenging terrain ahead. The natural rock formations here showcase millions of years of geological history.

The final leg along McKay Hollow presents the trail's most technical section, featuring a moderately steep descent through a lush, boulder-strewn hollow. Seasonal waterfalls and crystal-clear streams create a refreshing atmosphere as you complete your journey.

Wildlife and Natural Features

The trail traverses diverse ecosystems home to white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and over 100 bird species. Spring hikers will be treated to blooming mountain laurel and wildflowers, while summer offers a dense canopy of shade. The fall transformation brings spectacular foliage, and winter reveals hidden rock formations and expanded views through leafless trees.

Planning Your Visit

Parking is available at the Monte Sano State Park main lot near the ranger station. A daily entrance fee or annual state park pass is required. The trail is well-maintained and blazed, though hiking boots are strongly recommended, especially for the McKay Hollow section.

Bring plenty of water and snacks, as the complete loop typically takes 4-5 hours to complete. Cell service can be spotty in some areas, so downloading a trail map beforehand is advisable.

Experience the natural beauty of Northern Alabama on this fantastic loop trail – a perfect day hike for outdoor enthusiasts seeking both challenge and beauty in Monte Sano State Park.
