A lot of people commute up to Pinecrest and Kennedy Meadows each year, yet drive by an opportunity to see the bigger picture... A bird's eye view of the lake that draws tens of thousands of people into Tuolumne County every year.
Driving on 108, heading up towards the Sonora Pass, you will drive by the Pinecrest Resort and head up the road another 8 miles or so until you find Herring Creek Road. You will then take Herring Creek Road to Forest Route 4N12. There will be a slight need for ground clearance, but I clear this path with my Subaru Forester just fine. This road goes on for about 3 miles, stay left. You'll eventually get to a camping area where you will park. After that, you just have to cross the bridge and follow the signs up to the peak. Usually, I find that the path less traveled is best, so don't be afraid to go straight up the mountain side. There is about 800 to 1200 feet in elevation gain depending on the route you take. This trail never disappoints, for when you reach the top, the sweat and dirt is always worth it. From the top, you'll get 270 degree views looking over the lake and up into the granite valley carved out by the Stanislaus that feeds the lake below. There are several cascades along the river that can also be hiked up to, however, that's a different adventure.
All you need to do this hike is some water and some time, but it's always smart to pack a little more. I usually take my essentials and throw them into my backpack.
