Madeline Island and Apostle Islands Kayaking Day Trip

Bayfield, Wisconsin

Description

Added by Jacob Green

Simple day trip with access to a vast amount of the geological beauties of the Apostle Islands and Madeline Island area

Head out in the morning to Madeline Island (close to Ashland, WI). To get there you need to take the ferry, which is roughly a thirty minute ride and has a nice passenger viewing deck. Once you have arrived on the island, take the 10 minute scenic drive into Big Bay State Park, heading to the Point Picnic Area. There is a bathroom near the parking lot.

Take the trail about 500 ft from the parking lot to a picnic table, next to a cliff along the edge of Superior. After you eat you can walk further down the park along the cliffs, which provides many great hammock spots and photo opportunities. After you have enjoyed the island enough, take the ferry back to the mainland.

Continue driving north to Lost Creek Adventures for a sunset kayak tour. You will be briefed on some kayaking skills, then driven to a beach about 4 miles away. You will spend about another half hour talking about safety and technique, on the beach.

You will then set out towards the beautiful red cliffs, where you can spend time exploring the crevasses and caves. Our wonderful tour guides explained many of the key geological features and how they were formed. If the water is calm enough, you may be able to kayak through low caves, as well. After a little over an hour of paddling, the guides will take you back towards shore, in time to see the sunset over Lake Superior, as you land back at the beach. Overall it was a excellent day trip!
