5-mile hike roundtrip with 1400' elevation gain. Great hike to see larches during in the fall. Amazing views of both the North Cascades East Slope and Methow Valley. Hike to one of the highest viewpoints in Eastern Washington.

With fall coming quickly, that means larch fever. Views of the North Cascades, Methow Valley, and fall colors all at 7000 feet, doing the short hike of just over 2 miles up to the Goat Peak Lookout will not disappoint.

The hike begins in a beautiful forest you'd expect too see at 5500 feet. The alpine landscape will keep you occupied through the thick and thin of this short hike. Although this hike is only 5 miles round trip, it has its challenging stretch as you'd expect with any hike in the North Cascades. Just under the 1 mile mark, the trail will turn into a steep grade that will take you up 800 feet of elevation over a mile. This section is the only challenging part of the hike. After you finish this, you'll be on top of a ridge right next to Goat Peak, with the Lookout, Larches, and North Cascades in sight. The last half-mile is a breeze and will give you views which will have you finding yourself stopping frequently to take pictures.

Enjoy lunch at the lookout with a flawless panoramic viewpoint, and fresh alpine air that comes with being at 7000 feet. Happy hiking!

Hike to the Goat Peak Lookout Reviews

12 Mile Drive Up rocky Forest Service Roads to get to the trail head, roughly an hour and a 1/2 driving time from the Mazama store. I find it strange that it's not mentioned in any books or on the web. Definitely keep that in mind when planning your trip. The hike is relatively short and very steep in some sections. With some hiking experience this hike will be manageable and worth the journey up to the fire lookout.

While on a weekend vacation we chose to run up to the Goat Peak Lookout because of its fairly close proximity to Winthrop, WA. It was a steep hike through late winter season snow in May but we made it to the lookout and were greeted with some gorgeous views. Bring a jacket and enjoy your lunch at 7000 feet!
