A sublime environment for both alleviation and excitement.

As an area of Olympic National Park, Hoh Rainforest requires that all overnight backpackers must obtain backcountry wilderness permits from the Port Angeles Ranger station, or other permit stations within the Olympic Peninsula. After a long, but scenic drive down Hoh Valley Road, you will arrive at the parking area, where all spots are available for day hikers and backpacking adventurers. Packed up and ready to go, start heading your way down the Hoh River Trail (don't forget your bear canister!!!). Though there may be a few day hikers within the first mile, it will surely dwindle down to those who are seeking a grand camping experience.

About a mile into the well-maintained Hoh River Trail, you will run into the first backcountry sites. While these spots provide phenomenal overnight opportunities, you will want to continue your trek to enjoy the utter beauty of the Hoh Rainforest. Within a short mile, a beautiful opening will arise, entrenching you into the spectacular Olympic Mountain Range. You will be enthralled with the panoramic views of the Hoh River Valley. Walk a bit off the trail into the Hoh River and you will find your feet in the cold, yet exhilarating glacial water filled with Olympic Mountain sediment.  As you continue to wander down the trail, be vigilant of the side trails that will lead you into serendipitous water displays. Ranging from bending streams to fifteen foot high waterfalls, there are a diversity of mysteries to be discovered around Hoh River Trail. As you near mile three, you will arrive at the Mt. Tom wilderness sites, which provide a serene setting for any kind of night. Beyond this spot, the essence of tranquility continues with moss covered Sitka Spruces and other lush vegetation up to Five Mile Island. Although this was only a one-night wilderness retreat, Five Mile Island is a primary location to set up camp if you are continuing your adventure to the Olympic Ranger Station, Elk Lake, or Blue Glacier. If this is your final destination, do not be disappointed after the sun goes down. Stars paint the sky, and with some luck, a moon sighting will glow up the Olympic range. The morning hike back will consist of a cool, yet comfortable environment for yet another phenomenal trek. This is also the best time to spot wildlife, including black bear, elk, and other Olympic residents. Upon completion of a trip inside the Hoh Rainforest, your wilderness experiences will never be the same.
