Backpack and Bike to the Three Fingers Lookout

Granite Falls, Washington

Description

Added by Riley Beck

The Three Fingers access road is washed out and the trailhead is only accessible by mountain bike making the area low traffic.

From Granite Falls, WA take The Mount Loop Highway east for 7 miles and take Forest Road 41 across from the Robe Canyon Trailhead. Follow the road for 8 miles bearing right twice and come to a bridge with large boulders blocking it. Park you vehicle and hop on the mountain bikes and get ready for a 10 mile walk/ ride. Depending on how fast you ride you should reach the trailhead in roughly two hours.

There is a fallen over Northwest Trail pass required sign on the right and in the tree's is the weathered, unmaintained Three Fingers trailhead sign.Starting out at around 3000 feet elevation make your way on to the brushy and overgrown trail. The trail is a lot of ups and downs along with some fallen trees and other obstacles. After gaining about 750 casually over the next 2.5 miles and reach Saddle Lake. The trail improves from here getting less overgrown and it starts opening up into a series of three meadows. After some more climbing reach Goat Flats elevation 4,800. Pick from dozens of scenic meadow campsites. There are several tarns to get water from here unless a sunny year dries them up. From Goat Flats head up to the lookout. Gain the ridge and hike a mile or a little further to reach Tin Can Gap elevation 5800 and your first real view of your goal. From here wind your way around the unnamed peaks on Three Fingers on an exposed rocky trail. Starting gaining gradually as you reach the backside of the peak. Head up the glacier that may require crampons and ice axes. From here scramble up the the series of three ladders that takes you to the lookout. And enjoy 360 degree views of the North Cascades from one of its most recognizable peaks.
