Great overlook just steps off the Appalachian Trail. Whether your thru-hiking or just going for a day hike, Raven Rocks is a must stop off in Virginia, and only an hour west of Washington D.C.

Raven Rock's is a great day hike located right off the Appalachian Trail and Route 7 in Virginia, that is easily accessible year round. The trailhead is located right at the intersection of Pine Grove Rd and Route 7. It is fairly small and can fill up fast during peak times so alternative parking is located directly across Route 7 in the Bears Den parking lot (do not try and park directly along the road as your car may get towed). The trailhead is located in the parking lot and it's about 2 miles to the top of the overlook. The hike is moderately strenuous with a lot of up and downs and switchbacks so make sure you are prepared with plenty of water, food, and sturdy shoes. Plan to get to the top around sunset as the overlook faces to the west for a great view of the sunset over the northern tail Shenandoah Valley.

The overlook is directly off the AT so there are a few camping spots around the overlook off the trail for those who want to continue on the trail or make it an overnight trip. Rock climbing is also available at the overlook but climbers take responsibility for their own safety. There is a small trail to the side of the rocks that leads down to the bottom of the climb. The climb is a relatively easy single pitch climb with a few options for top rope anchors at the top. Afterwards feel free to make the quick drive to Twin Oaks Tavern Winery or Dirt Farm Brewing for a a drink with a view over the valley.
