Most people are familiar with the idea of Backcountry Skiing or Snowboarding, but we decided to make it a little interesting and add Sledding to the list.
Warning: This activity takes a very adventurous and slightly fearless person.
First of all, sorry my pictures are terrible, I had to use my phone which is terrible quality.. We parked at the Timpanogos Trailhead parking lot. We strapped on our snowshoes and tethered our sleds to our bags and headed out. We started up a trail that for the first 40 minutes followed the alpine loop road. We veered off the road and headed into a grove of aspen trees and up the hill. We continued to climb up as we intended to top out at a ridge line. The trail was mostly ski tracks, so be courteous. We headed up on the edge of a gully until we could see the ridge line, then we veered to the left and followed the trail up to the ridge. In all it took us around an hour and a half to get up there. Once we reached the top, we followed the ridge until we were centered in the middle of the hill. Its important that if you do this, you sled down( facing north) the direction that you hiked in, if you go to the south you will most likely die, its quite steep.
We undid our snowshoes, strapped them to our bags looped the tethers for our sleds around our person and jumped on our stomachs and sled down. Watch out for trees and other obstacles but for the most part its relatively safe. I managed to hit 21mph on my sled going face first down a mountain, my buddy hit 29mph! Its a blast and it didn't take us very long to get back to the car. I would suggest going up in the early afternoon so you have enough time before the sun starts to go behind timp, the snow started to get pretty icy which makes for a painful fall when you wipe out, as well try to go when you know there will be fresh powder. Hope you guys try it out and have a blast like we did!
