Summit the highest peak in Tasmania's remote south west

Itinerary

Hobart to Trailhead, then trek to High Camp Hut

This morning you will be picked up from your hotel in Hobart by your guides as per the time arranged at your pre-departure briefing. We transfer to the south west of Tasmania by private minibus with a morning tea break along the way. The drive to the Mount Anne Circuit Trailhead takes approximately 3 hours. We begin the steep ascent onto the spur leading us up to High Camp Hut beneath Mt Eliza and its associated plateau. The views gained on this ascent are spectacular and give us a taste of what is to come once trekking amongst the heights of Mt Anne, Mt Sarah Jane and Mt Lot. The alpine herb fields and endemic cushion plant communities provide a unique backdrop to the awesome water masses of Lake Pedder and Lake Gordon with the might of the Western Arthur's looming in the background.Walking distance: 3.6km | Walking time: approx 3-4hrs

High Camp Hut to Shelf Camp via Eliza Plateau

Today our trek takes us higher onto the mountain massif via tricky boulder fields and straight forward walking across the top plateau between Mt Anne and Mt Eliza. We drop our full packs at a junction and attempt the steep, challenging summit of Mt Anne (1425m) before descending down to Shelf Camp. Shelf Camp is up there with the best wilderness campsites in Tasmania – backed by grand cliffs and fronted by an unbeatable view over the majestic southern face of Mt Anne. Walking distance: 3.1km + Mt Anne side trip | Walking time: 3-4hrs + side trip

Contingency day – summit Mt Anne and explore surrounds

Today is factored into the itinerary to allow us maximum chance of climbing some of the epic surrounding peaks in fine weather. We utilse the day to explore the area, including a summit of Mt Anne (if we didn't get to yesterday). We camp at Shelf Camp or continue to the Judds Charm Campsite. If the weather permits us to continue to Judds Charm we will have extra time tomorrow for an optional summit of Lots Wife (1089m).

Shelf Camp to Lonely Tarns/Judds Charm campsite

Today's trek starts off in a spectacular fashion with the negotiating of the Notch. The approach to the Notch is along a razor sharp ridge, with the half way stop providing awe-inspiring views of Lake Judd, The Western Arthur's, Federation Peak and even as far as Precipitous Bluff. We sidle along the north face of Mt Lot (1156m), summit the mountain and then begin the slow and exposed climb down along Lightning Ridge to our campsite for the night.Walking distance: 3.9km | Walking time: 8hrs +

Descend to the Red Tape Creek trail finish

This is a long day's walk when influenced by wet weather conditions. The Anne River plains can provide us with some interesting sedge plant soil adventures and the track off the Sarah Jane plateau is dominated by heavy scrub. We cross the Anne River and arrive at Red Tape Creek. Here we are met by our minibus and transferred to Hobart, aiming to drop you at your accommodation in the late afternoon/early evening. Tonight your group may plan to meet for dinner at one of Hobart's many fine eateries to celebrate your unforgettable bushwalking experience of the last 5 days. Walking distance: 12km | Walking time: 8hrs

Additional Information

Located in the remote south west of Tasmania the Mount Anne Circuit presents one of the world's great bushwalking challenges. The circuit combines all of our favourite aspects of a south west wilderness epic: a spectacular objective, sub alpine crags and exposed scrambles, deep forests, idyllic lakes and stunning remote camps. Our five day itinerary allows us enough time to do a complete circuit with extra time for side trips and in case of delays due to bad weather. Starting at Scotts Peak Road at Condominium Creek we trek via Mt Anne, the Lonely Tarns, Lake Judd crossing and the Anne River to complete the circuit at Red Tape Creek. This is an extremely demanding unsupported bushwalk subject to some of Tasmania's most extreme weather. The Mount Anne Circuit is open to people with previous unsupported pack carrying bushwalking experience with a high level of fitness and confidence in difficult geographical and weather situations. Please contact our office to discuss your suitability for this unforgettable, once in a lifetime trip.
