Itinerary

Transfer Launceston to Freycinet, walk to Cooks Beach

Our adventure begins when we pick you up from your accommodation in historic Launceston between 7:30-8:00am and drive south-east through picturesque farming country to the magnificent Freycinet National Park. Our walk today follows undulating track around the pink-granite foothills of The Hazards mountain range. This trail affords tranquil views of Great Oyster Bay and meanders through coastal she-oak forests before reaching Hazards Beach, a fantastic place to take a load off, enjoy a snack and perhaps have a leisurely swim in the crystal clear waters. We trek the length of Hazards Beach then follow the track around a headland, through coastal heath and woodlands of Blue gum and Peppermint gums, rich in birdlife. In the afternoon we reach our sheltered camp at Cooks Beach and settle in with a hot drink and pre-dinner nibbles. Your guides will prepare a delicious dinner while you soak in the serenity and beauty of the National Park.Walking Distance: 13km | Walking Time: 3-5 hours

Cooks Beach to Schouten Passage

After a hearty breakfast we leave our camp set up and walk with light day packs, continuing south. The track opens up onto the south-west end of Bryans Beach, a place not often visited by the regular Freycinet walkers. From here we can enjoy unimpeded views of Schouten Passage and its namesake island. The history of this region is fascinatingly diverse (Freycinet went through a lot before it became the National Park it is today!) and your guides will delight in sharing the stories with you. For as long or as short as you wish, our group can explore the riches the area has to offer: hidden lagoons, rock pools full of interesting sea life... or just immerse ourselves in the beautiful surrounds. We then make our way back to Cooks Beach in the afternoon to enjoy another scrumptious meal and recount the wonderful day.Walking Distance: 6-10km | Walking time: 4-6 hours

Mt Freycinet and Wineglass Bay

We have early start on this morning to ensure we make the most of the challenging day ahead. After packing up our camp we head back down Cooks Beach to the trail junction and rejoin the Peninsula track. After a short time the gradient begins to steepen as we ascend the East Freycinet Saddle. The diverse range of vegetation types as we pass through, along with abundant birdlife and plenty of signs of marsupial activity, make this a beautiful section of the track.Reaching the 620m summit of Mt Freycinet, we are rewarded with breathtaking views in all directions; a memory of this wonderful area that truly will last a lifetime. After lunch we begin the long trek along the ridge to Mt Graham, then onwards and downwards to tackle the sometimes difficult descent to the world renowned Wineglass Bay. Here we set up camp for our last night in the park and again enjoy our dinner surrounded by sublime views.Walking Distance: 12km | Walking Time: 6-8 hours

Wineglass Bay and Mt Amos

Your guides will encourage you to be up nice and early to witness an East Coast sunrise from Wineglass Bay. Sighting the first rays of the morning sun on the Hazards Range is spectacular as the rose quartz granite is enhanced by the colours of the dawn. Today's walk out is relatively short so we are in no rush as we pack up camp and stroll along the pristine white sands of the bay and up to the Wineglass Bay lookout. From here we descend the north-west face of the Hazards before reaching the track to Mt Amos. Depending on time and weather, we have the opportunity to walk to the summit of Mt Amos for panoramic views of the surrounding mountain range and coast. This is a rugged walk and most of the ascent route is on bare rock. After a summit lunch, we return to Launceston via Campbell Town arriving at your accommodation at approximately 5pm.Walking Distance: 7km | Walking Time: 5-6 hours
