Our unique route (a WT original) traces a path through the terraced vineyards of Lombardia's Valtellina region, into Switzerland's sunny Engadine Valley, across Liechtenstein, with its turreted castles, and into the grand Alps of Austria past prehistoric sites on the Eschnerberg Trail. Along the way we'll see Romanesque architecture, ancient spa towns, and fascinating archæological sites, enjoying farm-to-table meals, seasonal delicacies, and wines en route, including a special wine tasting at the renowned cellars of the Prince of Liechtenstein.
Itinerary
Days 1-3
Bergamo, Italy / Bormio
A walking tour unlocks the medieval world of Bergamo, and we hike trails in the green Valtellina Valley, see the World Heritage-listed rock art at Capo di Ponte, and enjoy lunch in a family-run agriturismo for a chance to sample wine, cheese, and other regional specialties. The central piazza dates from the Iron Age, and our hotel, perched over the Valtellina Valley, has natural hot springs and a spa.
Days 4-7
Livigno, Valle di Fræle / Engadine, Switzerland / Davos
We hike past sparkling lakes to the alpine village of Livigno, with its "end of the road" ambiance. A narrow trail brings us across the Italian-Swiss border into the pristine wilderness of Swiss National Park, and from Davos, we take the funicular up Weissfluhjoch (8,835') for a breathtaking hike.
Days 8-9
Liechtenstein / Vaduz
Our Liechtenstein hikes bring us into vineyards, mountains, and charming towns including Vaduz, the capital, with its atmospheric castle perched high on a hill. The Prince of Liechtenstein lives here, and we'll have dinner and a tasting at his winery one evening.
Days 10-12
Innsbruck, Austria
A historic alpine trail brings us from Liechtenstein into the medieval Austrian town of Feldkirche on foot. In the dramatic setting of Innsbruck, we explore its cobbled streets and Baroque architecture, then catch the funicular up to 7,400 feet for a final hike with panoramic views. Depart on Day 12.
