With waters as blue as the Mediterranean, Canyon Lake is a great place to escape from the Texas heat. With spots for lounging and cliff jumping, Canyon Lake has something for everyone.
Canyon Lake is a large recreation area for boaters and swimmers, but the best spot to cliff jump is at Overlook Park (right by the huge dam...you can't miss it!). Once you've parked, head downhill toward the lake. Don't be discouraged if you see a lot of people at the shore...keep walking past the bend and you'll find a more secluded area. The cliffs here range anywhere from 4 ft to 20 ft (this depends on the level of the lake, which can change due to drought or releasing water form the dam...ALWAYS be sure to check the depth before jumping!). However, the water is almost always deep enough to dive in.
Dive, twist and cannonball into the aqua blue waters and cool off! There are a few spots to get out near your jump spot, but they require upper body strength and athletic ability. For those not as strong, simply swim back toward the bend where you can easily climb out and jump back in. You can also swim into alcoves within the cliffs.
Always be aware of your surroundings, whether it is other divers, waves and boaters. While boats typically never come near the shore, it is always best to be on the lookout.
After you're exhausted from swimming, take a break by having a picnic! There are picnic tables near the parking lot, but a lot of people bring their own lawn chairs and coolers to enjoy lunch by the water.
