Off-Road and Camp on Padre Island National Seashore

Corpus Christi, Texas

Description

Added by Danielle Martin

Three day off-road drive along the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world.

There is only one entrance to the island, and that's the JFK Causeway onto Padre Island from Highway 358. Once on the island, the highway changes to Park Road 22. Continue about 10 miles south on Park Road 22 to reach the park entrance. The physical address for Malaquite Visitor Center is 20420 Park Road 22, Corpus Christi, TX 78418. There, you can buy a few items such as toilet paper if there's something you forgot to pack, but Corpus Christi is the nearest area to buy gas, food, and ice.

Once on Malaquite beach, air down your tires for sand. It's 70 miles to the end of the beach, where there is no exit, and you'll have to turn around. Plan on staying two nights to make the whole drive. You can camp anywhere on the beach, just be sure to stay back from the road, and mark your tent with glowsticks.
