The Sinks is one of the most visited roadside waterfalls in the Smokies. This dramatic, jagged cascade tumbles over a 10-foot drop into a deep pool formed by a historic logging-era dynamite blast in the late 1800s .

Getting There

  • Access: Just off Little River Road (Old State Hwy 73), about 12 miles west of Sugarlands Visitor Center and approximately 14 mi from Gatlinburg .

  • Parking: Small pull‑off lot adjacent to the cascade; fills quickly on summer weekends—arrive early ().

History & Geology

  • Created inadvertently when loggers dynamited a major log jam in the late 1800s to clear the Little River, resulting in the deep chasm known as The Sinks .

Swimming & Safety

  • Swimming is not recommended within The Sinks area. Strong currents and hidden undertows, especially near the waterfall, have led to multiple drownings and serious injuries—nearly 60 deaths reported since the 1930s.

  • Rangers strongly advise against cliff‐jumping, cliff‑side swimming, and entering the water near the falls.

  • Nearby calmer spots like Townsend Wye or Greenbrier offer safer swimming options.

Best Times to Visit

  • Spring & fall offer lush surroundings and thunderous cascades.

  • Summer—peak visitor season—bring crowds and early parking hustle.

  • Winter months reveal striking frozen cascades in cold weather .

What to Bring & Tips

  • Good camera for beautiful views and swirling white water.

  • Hiking shoes—rocks can be slippery.

  • Life jackets and water shoes if wading in designated calm areas.

  • Pack snacks, water, and leave no trace.

  • Expect minimal cell service in the park; download maps or capture screenshots.

Nearby Activities

  • Meigs Creek Trail: A 6.8‑mile moderate hike starts right at The Sinks parking lot .

  • Fishing: The Little River offers quiet fishing opportunities away from the cascade .
