this is a 10 mile out and back hike that covers an unusual landscape with unique formations, beautiful prairie with wildflowers and options to climb the formations for amazing views.
this is a 10 mile out and back hike that has many places you can jump off trail and explore this unique landscape. Looks a bit like a mini Grand Canyon, though the formations look rocky they are actually solid dirt that can crumble underfoot, so you must be careful when you decide to climb. The castle trail hooks up with Saddle Pass where you can climb two formations with amazing views. These climbs are not for novice hikers, while they are not extreme some level of experience would be good. Keep on the Castle trail and at the end you can do some smaller hikes with amazing views.
I came back and hooked up with the Medicine Root trail which connects at Saddle Pass. Medicine Root trail is more prairie and wildflower views and is a great trail to take back.
Enjoy the moonscape of Castle Trail and the Prairie views of Medicine Root Trail. They count this trail as 10 miles, but we tallied a bit over 13. Gorgeous views. Beware of rattlesnakes. There are signs everywhere and I did see one, but he slithered away.
