7 Tips For Enjoying The Beach Even If You Don't Like Water

The beach isn't just for surfers and those with boats! Anybody can enjoy the beach whether you get seasick or simply don't like the water.

Despite loving everything outdoors, I never actually enjoyed hanging out on beaches. Growing up near LA, my friends loved spending a sunny afternoon around the water. Over the years, I've found my own way to enjoy the sunny Los Angeles beaches even though I never found the water all that special. Here are some simple tips to enjoy any beach!

1. Play In The Sand

I never thought I'd say this.....but playing in the sand can be surprisingly satisfying. You don't have to be a little kid to make an amazing sand castle or fort. The other day, I made a giant mountain of sand with a feather on top. I felt like a kid again and really enjoyed it!

2. Have A Picnic!

Laying on a towel or cloth in the sun....ahhh.....so relaxing......Now add some amazing food to the equation and you got a perfect Saturday afternoon. I love afternoon lunch dates at the beach, especially ones that are a bit more isolated. Just you, your friend/partner, amazing food, and the sound of the gentle waves. What more could you ask for?

3. Reading Next To The Beach

I absolutely love reading, writing, and drawing next to the calm waters. I like to bring my iPad, a stack of books, and a nice little notepad. Perfect for some doodling, writing, and notes. I'll read my favorite fanfiction stories (been obsessed with short stories and Arrow fics lately). Draw the sunset and write poetry about the gentle breezes and waves. It's a wonderful afternoon of creativity and thought. What more could you ask for?

If you aren't a big fan of reading, I like staring out at the ocean while listening to Audible ebooks or podcasts. It's equally as relaxing and makes me feel really happy.

4. Bring A Dog!

Dogs are AWESOME when it comes to beaches. If your dog has never been to the beach before, you're in for a treat as your companion explores what it's like to be on a beach.

If you don't have a dog, I've had friends use services like Rover or Wag to get dogs to bring to the beach. The bright smiling puppy face will make it worth it.

5. Frisbee Or Tag

The beach is a fun place to toss around a frisbee or play tag. The sand feels amazing on my toes as I run through and have fun. I used to wonder why I would bother to drive an hour to the beach when I could toss around a frisbee or chase around friends in a nearby park. The sand and atmosphere seriously make all the difference. Give it a try. Trust me: you won't regret it.

6. People Watch

This might sound stalker-ish. This might be stalker-ish. But I like to just watch what people are saying and doing at the beach. Outside of a lot of attractive people being around, it's fun to imagine what and why people are at the beach. Is this guy just there to show off his new gym membership results? Are they tourists? It's fun to speculate and dream.

7. Hike!

Almost every beach I've been to has had some trails around that lead to gorgeous views. If you don't like the beach itself, you can still take advantage of the beautiful views by going on hikes nearby. I use the AllTrails app to find trails that fit my difficulty.

Some Bonus Suggestions:

  • photography
  • kayaking (assuming you just don't like swimming and you don't mind being in a boat)
  • painting
  • volleyball

Whatever the case is, beaches are incredibly beautiful so take advantage! Like you, I was never a fan of the water, but I've found so many ways to really enjoy the beauty and calm that come with the beach.
