It's best to visit the desert in the Winter, so you're not sweating bullets the whole time. You also won't be fighting crowds for camping spots, as few people visit this time of year. Don't be surprised if you see a coyote waltz through your campsite, but they're super nice. It's a great place for rock climbing and some pretty epic hiking trails, and especially photogenic. Joshua Tree National Park is a long-time fav for all kinds of artists, coming out to star gaze and shoot in such an abstract landscape.
