Climbing Machu Picchu Mountain (Montaña) is an intense but rewarding experience, with stunning views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding mountains.
The path to the trailhead is well-marked from the main entrance of Machu Picchu. Following the same path as the route to the Sun Gate, wooden signs point you towards the path for Machu Picchu Mountain. Starting at an elevation of ~7,972 feet, sign in at the warden's hut at the trailhead then begin the trek up along the original stone Inca trail to the summit at 10,111 feet above sea level.
The first half of the trail is a steady, gradual incline with many sets of stone stairs. There are several view/rest points along the trail, providing ample opportunites to take photos, drink water, and catch your breath. It is important to note the elevation, as the hike might feel more difficult than normal. At about the halfway point, the trail becomes more narrow, steep, and challenging. The trail eventually passes through a narrow stone gateway, and from there follows a narrow path along the mountain ridge to the summit. For some sections closer to the top, steep stone stairs cling to the side of the mountain with a sharp drop-off to one side. Once at the top, there is a small hut with benches and a viewpoint several more feet past that. The view of Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu, and the surrounding mountains is spectaular. Relax on the top and enjoy the well-earned vista!
The trail down follows the same path. Most people manage to ascend in about 2.5 hours or less, with the descent taking usually 1.5-2 hours or less (however, this depends on your speed and how often you stop). While the view from the top is amazing, many view points along the trail offer better views of the ruins themselves.
Permits to climb Machu Picchu Mountain are limited to 400 per day. These permits can sell out quick, so be sure to plan ahead and get your tickets in advance.
