Kempton, Pennsylvania

Description

Added by Shannon Bushinsky

We all know that Pennsylvania is known for its autumn beauty. What's better than capturing the colors on top of a mountain overlooking the valley?

Located near Eckville, Pennsylvania, Hawk Mountain is home to PA's showcased autumn foliage and unique raptor migratory patterns and attracts millions of visitors from around the country.  Located just 35 minutes from Allentown and 1.5 hours from Philadelphia, Hawk Mountain provides the perfect spot to set up your camera and get rolling with your photos.

Coming from I-78 west, take Exit 35 toward Lenhartsville.  On Route 143 north, go 4 miles to Sunoco gas station on right.  Turn left at blue Hawk Mountain sign onto Hawk Mountain Road.  Go 7 miles to top of mountain and turn left into parking lot.  It seems like you are winding into the middle of nowhere forever, but trust me, you are heading in the right direction.  If parking if full by the sanctuary (it usually is), you are able to park on the roadside near the trail.

The best place to capture the stunning foliage and migrating raptors is the North Lookout, which is a 4.5 mile rock - strewn loop trail.  Follow the single trail to the South Lookout.  Turn left and follow the Lookout trail past the Appalachian, River of Rocks, and Ridge Overlooks as well as Bald Lookout.  You will get to a couple of switchbacks up the sudden incline and end up between large boulders on either side of you.  Continue on and you will reach a steep rock path.  Climb up this and you will be at the North Lookout, which is a boulder - covered peak overlooking the valley and the Pinnacle mountain ridge.
