Enjoy a Sunset at Heceta Head Lighthouse

Florence, Oregon

Description

Enjoy a spectacular sunset on a near private beachHike up to the lighthouse (less than a mile) and see a huge stretch of the Oregon coastPlan a romantic evening with your significant otherPhotographer's delight!

Just north of Florence, OR, US-101 gets exciting. Follow the narrow winding road that curls precariously along cliffs with breathtaking vistas and many pull-offs for multiple photo opportunities. After crossing the narrow bridge, look for a small road to the right that leads down to a small parking lot. The lot has a box for donations, but there is no need to pay for parking. Ignore the signs that say you do! Bathrooms are right near the entrance to the gravel path.

From here, there is a protected beach that doesn't seem crowded even when the lot is full. Bask in the sun and take in the scenic ocean view, or wander up the gravel path towards the lighthouse itself.

Off the left side of the gravel path, about halfway up, there is a small dirt path near a link of wooden fence that winds out to a few huge rocks and an up-close-and-personal rendezvous with the ocean spray. Film photographers will want to bring more than a few rolls of film here...

On the way back down from the lighthouse, look for a set of steps on the left of the gravel path that leads up a steep set of dirt switchbacks. The steep trek is rewarded with spectacular views North up the cliffs of the Oregon coast, as well as another looking down over the lighthouse to the South.

Head back to the beach for the sunset that will amaze, and watch as the sky turns from blue, to orange, to a deep purple. As the last rays dip down beneath the horizon, head back into the small downtown area of Florence and grab a burger and an adult beverage at Beachcomber Pub - my personal favorite is called 'The Garbage Collector', paired with a Long Island Iced Tea! Families beware here, though, as they don't allow any minors inside, even if they're just eating.
