Distance: 1.4 miles roundtripDuration: 3-5 hrs. (depending on how long you stay at the falls)Elevation gain: 650 ftRelatively short hike with a huge payoffUp-close views of the waterfallOfficial starting point of the Linville GorgeThe highest volume waterfall on the Northern Edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains

Linville Falls is a 90-foot, four step waterfall that plunges 45 feet into the river below, marking the start of the Linville Gorge.

Hike along Linville Gorge Trail toward the Plunge Basin Overlook. About 0.2 mile from the Visitor Center, the trail will fork – the right will take you to the overlook, but turn left to reach the Plunge Basin itself.

The next half mile winds down the rock cliffs, following along the Linville River and eventually bringing you to the base of the falls. Keep an eye out for slippery rocks and poison ivy, and don't forget your camera!

Of the two parking lots in the Linville Falls area, park at the Visitor Center, unless you plan on camping or hiking to the overlooks before descending into the gorge.
