Camp at Mt. Pisgah
The Mt. Pisgah campground is nestled right off of the Blue Ridge Parkway near Canton, NC. Since it is at an elevation of 4,980 feet the campground is a perfect destination to beat the heat and humidity that the region can be known for in the summer months. Reservations and information can be found on their website, they do have 74 first-come first-served sites so reservations aren't really ne...
Climb Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower
This is an extremely easy trail with a minimal incline. The tower, built in 1941, standing 70 feet above the summit, can be nerve wracking, even for those who aren't scared of heights. However, most feel it's worth the view. Expect to see fellow hikers. On pretty days there can be a few people waiting at the base of the tower for their chance to climb the stairs.
Mills River Valley Overlook
Mills River Valley Overlook is located along Blue Ridge Parkway. Situated at milepost 404.5 with an elevation of about 4,085 ft, this paved overlook offers sweeping views into the surrounding valleys on both sides of the ridgeline—rare among Parkway vantage points. This overlook is ideal for both sunrise and sunset watching, with very little tree cover to block the glow. It is also an exce...

Hike Big East Fork Shining Rock Loop
We began this trip by camping overnight in Graveyard Fields. Those camp sites are .5 miles from the car, so we kept our food there over night. Bear activity has increased, so it's strongly advised to bring a bear canister and be wise about food storage.
We woke up early the next morning made breakfast, lightened our packs and took off for a day loop hike. We decided to hike the route clockwise...
Shining Rock via Shining Creek Trail
There are several ways to access the Shining Rock Wilderness Area, but go for the main trail head off of Hwy 276. The trail is split by the Pigeon River, providing a seemingly infinite combinations of trails and routes, keeping in mind that this area intersects often with the well known Art Lobe trail. We like to go on two night trips, spending the first night at the base of the mountain playin...
