Black Mountain Crest Trail

Burnsville, North Carolina

Description

Added by Wesley Banks

The 11 mile point-to-point hike starts at Bowlens Creed and goes to Mt. Mitchell Summit (and then back if you want). It's a shuttle hike, so you can start at the bottom or top and have someone pick you up at either location.

It is renowned as "the most rugged trail in the east," mainly because it is the highest peak east of the Mississippi River.

We went in early November and there was snow on the ground starting around 2 miles into the hike. It was pretty icy about half way up and wouldn't recommend hiking this in winter.

Winds were low towards the top, but we heard stories about winds consistently topping 50 mph, so take note of the weather.

You cannot hike this in one day, so be prepared to set camp.
