The dayhike to a view of Rob Roy Glacier is well worth the effort -- the views don't quit! Getting to the trailhead only adds to the adventure if you're in a vehicle with standard clearance.
The hike to a viewpoint of Rob Roy Glacier is an exceptional day hike on a clear day. The trailhead is about an hour of scenic driving from Wanaka, along the Matukituki River with a number of stream crossings on the gravel road section. We counted 12 fords on a day in late January 2017. There were many 2WD regular cars at the Raspberry Creek car park (trailhead), including ours. There are toilet facilities at the car park and near the turnaround point.
The hike starts out relatively flat along the valley for about one mile. After crossing the swing bridge, the climb is steady but generally gradual in the forest along the rushing river. As you near the viewpoint, you can start to catch glimpses of the spectacular glacier and waterfalls. This is a popular hike, so we were hardly alone at our turnaround/lunch spot, but there are plenty of rocks to lounge on.
There's a reason this is such a popular day hike given the rewarding view at the end!
