The Shelter Caves trail in Las Cruces, New Mexico, is a moderately challenging hike that spans approximately 3.46 miles round trip. The trail is marked by a variety of unique geological features, including the namesake Shelter Caves, which are large, naturally formed caves in the side of a limestone cliff. The trail begins with a gradual incline, leading hikers through a landscape dotted with native plants such as yucca and creosote. As the trail continues, it becomes steeper and more rugged, requiring careful footing. The trail culminates at the Shelter Caves, which offer a cool respite and panoramic views of the surrounding desert landscape. Hikers should wear sturdy shoes, carry plenty of water, and be prepared for sun exposure as shade is limited. The trail is best hiked in the cooler months of fall and spring. Despite its challenges, the Shelter Caves trail offers a unique opportunity to explore the distinctive geology and flora of the New Mexico desert.
