Explore the Geronimo Trail National Scenic Byway
This scenic highway goes through some nice country side and several old historic towns, some almost ghost towns. Lots of history and interesting places to stop. There are also festivals being held at different times of the year. Caballo Lake is also along the scenic byway .
Walk the Healing Waters Trail
Walk around the downtown area of Truth or Consequences, NM and enjoy seeing the old saps and historic buildings. Take in local history and enjoy some great local food.See the full map for trail options here.
Walk the Paseo del Rio Trail
This is a great scenic walk near the town of Truth or Consequences (which is a unique and fun town to explore). I stopped here to stretch my legs and take my dog on a little walk when we were making a long drive up Interstate 25. However, there is also camping here for $10 a night at a self-pay station for those that want to explore the area or the nearby Elephant Butte Reservoir.
Drive the Lake Valley Back Country Scenic Byway
Highway 27 stretches from Highway 26, west of Hatch, to Hillsboro, NM. where it merges with NM 152. From there drive east to Interstate 25 near Lake Caballo where the scenic byway ends. It is a winding road with nice mountain views and a ghost town that is well worth a stop. Lake Valley ghost town still has some interesting sights to visit including a museum depicting the local history. The tow...
Rincon Petroglyphs
Started my journey right after I park on the dirt that passes under the interstate. Headed north up the hill passed an old mine and continued until I reached the arroyo. Climbed around the arroyo to see the different petroglyphs. Good views of the Rio Grande valley below.
Hydra Trail in City of Rocks State Park
Start the hike from the visitor center. Hike toward the botanical garden and continue on the trail around the rock formations. You can wind your way through the taller rocks and enjoy the view! Connect to the other trails in the park for some additional hiking. There is little shade so bring plenty of water. Be sure to pick up a map at the visitor center or download it here.
