Why the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica Is So Magical

The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica will change your life.

I was about to turn 19 the first time I traveled to Costa Rica. Once I graduated college, I went back at age 21. I am now 26. You do the math...

That is an 8 year relationship with the land of "pura vida" and not just Costa Rica, but more specifically the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. A place I call home, Puerto Viejo.

Living off and on on the Caribbean coast has proved to be such a magical experience. My lifestyle has changed dramatically and I am not the person I once was. I have honestly learned so much. Here is why I think the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is so magical:

1. You WILL get lost in nature.

Puerto Viejo is a place where the jungle meets the beach. There is no way you can escape nature and because of this, you heal naturally. You see monkeys and sloths in trees daily and palm trees line the beach full of coconuts. The ocean is crystal clear and the beach is absolutely beautiful. Hikes through the jungle, going for a sunrise run on the beach, or taking a dip in the ocean is the best therapy.

2. You can't help but be healthy.

Even if you try to be unhealthy, living here does not allow you to be. At least not 100%. Transportation = a bicycle or walking. Yoga is cheap. There are tons of healing, surf/yoga, and active retreats available. Grocery stores and restaurants close at 10 PM. Pineapple and papaya are $1 and bananas, coconuts, and other tropical fruit native to the area can be picked and eaten. The air is warm here so even on rainy days you could be sweating while you are biking. Trust me, it's worth it. :)

3. Surfing is a lifestyle.

Believe it or not, there are waves on the Caribbean coast. Surfing is a lifestyle here and there are tons of opportunities to learn to surf. Several of my friends have surf schools and many of them are competitive surfers. The waves here can be challenging at times but also really good!

4. You make life long friends.

There is something about traveling that brings people together regardless of gender, race, background, culture, etc. I can't imagine myself making better friends than the ones I have made in Puerto Viejo. I have met some of the most creative, talented, loving, caring, free spirited, and inspirational human beings and for this I am forever grateful.
