Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary is a very special place. It offers its visitors quiet trails, diverse ecosystems, bird watching opportunities, and spectacular wildflower blooms.
It is easy to get lost in thought while walking through Eloise Butler. This small park has been loved and taken care of for over a hundred years; first by its creator, Eloise Butler, and then since her passing by the tight-knit community who call themselves the Friends of the Wildflower Garden.
Hundreds of Informational signs are dotted along the trail, documenting the native wildflowers that inhabit the area. This gives its visitors a chance to learn more about the habitats that once covered pre-developed Minneapolis.
If you're in need of a moment of reflection, there is a bench under an old-gnarled oak tree found in the wildflower/prairie area. It is the perfect place to grind out some problems or even get lost in a meditative state.
It's important to know that the park is open April 1st to October 15th and weekends only between Oct. 15 and Oct. 31. The Garden gates are open from 7:30 AM until one half hour before sunset. If you find yourself in the area during the winter, there are still great trails that surround the park which are open year-round. Some of these trails are designated for skiing only, so be mindful of oncoming skiers, as well as not stepping on the cross-country ski tracks.
