North Manitou is an amazing island in the middle of Lake Michigan. It is part of the sleeping bear sand dunes national lakeshore. The island is amazing for Wilderness camping and backpacking. It is easy to find a spot away from other people. There are plenty of forests, meadows, beaches, and hills to be explored.

Once you take the ferry from the mainland to the island, you are met by a ranger who will give you a brief orientation for camping on the island. Once this is over, you are free to wander and camp wherever you want as long as it is 300 feet from a water source. We started by hiking directly across the island headed west. This is about a 5.5 mile hike that will land you at the west coast of the island. There, you can find plenty of sand dunes and meadows, as well as an old abandoned barn and dock. It is smart to find a place that is wooded and has plenty of wind to camp, to keep yourself sheltered from the bugs. The mosquitos can be nasty, but there are flies on the island that have a mean bite. There are  also amazing places to explore on the north and south end of the island, including the potholes and lake Manitou.
