A nice hike that takes you from the shores of Lake Superior, along the Greenstone Ridge, and then to an island lake. This hike shows you some of the best spots that the island has to offer.
The hike from Lane Cove to the Chickenbone West campground is 12 miles. The hike out of Lane Cove up the Greenstone Ridge is a bit daunting, but you are rewarded with 360-degree views of the island and Lake Superior once you reach the top. The majority of your day will be spent hiking along the top of the Greenstone Ridge. You will experience fantastic views at all times while you are on the Greenstone Ridge, but be sure to stop and take in the particularly good views near Mount Franklin and Mount Ojibway. Be sure to watch your water supply though as there are very few water sources on the ridge.
Chickenbone West can get crowded but there are a good number of campsites, some of which are right on the lake. The lake provides for good fishing opportunities and the chance to see moose close to dusk.
