We went to the NORTH island. This island is great! A nice place to really backpack and experience nature. This was our first backpacking trip and we decided to start here. I cant really remember why. Maybe because it was an island and it was an all or nothing trip. Looking back now i think it was a fun and great camping experience. While i was there though thats another story. ALSO IF YOU CAN NOT HANDLE THE IDEA OF BEING STUCK ON THE ISLAND FOR ANOTHER DAY OR TWO DUE TO WEATHER DO NOT GO, THIS ISLAND IS NOT FOR YOU.
This island is 7-3/4 miles long by 4-1/4 miles wide with 20 miles of shoreline. You arrive by ferry to the island, it takes about an hour and a half to get to the island since you have to stop at the south island first. This island has no cars, no bikes, no power (except for the rangers and the arrival station). Once on the island you have a information briefing on the island and you tell the rangers where you might end up. Be the campsite on the island or just picking a spot out in the woods. We may have over estimated our abilities by deciding to trek straight to the other side of the island and then going off trail. Long story short DO NOT GO OFF TRAIL UNLESS YOU ARE AN EXPERIENCED BACKPACKER! Also DO NOT try and climb down the cliff you find at the shore line because it is steep and its sand stone so you will fall and bruise your butt and cut up your leg, thankfully that was all the had happened, and then you will be trapped on said shore line for five hours trying to find a clearing to climb up. The bugs also prevent you from taking breaks along these shorelines. SO STICK TO THE TRAILS! The walk back to the camp site was beautiful. Straight through the forest. Then the campsites are really cool on the island. Our thought was an open space with spot and everyone is in one area. Not the case though, its almost like an outdoors hotel. You walk down paths to small little openings and there is enough trees and brush between the campsites you cant see the other people and if no one is screaming you cant hear anything. The beach was amazing. Too cold for swimming when we went because it was unusually cold when we went to the island in July.
