Hike the Soapstone Valley Trail
This is an out-and-back trail that starts and ends on different roads, but you will have better luck parking on Albemarle Street NW (where I have indicated the trailhead is on the map). This is a long street with plenty of street parking, just pay attention to the signs to see how long you can leave your car there. The trail head is hard to miss - There is a sign on the side of the road that say...
Hike, Bike, or Run the Lakeside Trail and Muncaster Mill Trail
Park at the Meadowside Nature Center to Access the trailhead. This is a 3.4 mile loop with opportunities for birding and observing wildlife. Dogs are welcome on leash.
Turkey Run to Dead Run
Turkey Run Park is available to hikers year-around and is located just off of George Washington Parkway in McLean, Virginia. The exits are clearly marked and you simply drive to parking lot C-1 to start this hike.
Turkey Run has numerous trail options available but I chose an out-and-back. When you park you will see the large sign with a map. Hikers will walk past this sign and continue on the...
Fish the Potomac River in Arlington
Parking along 36th Road in Arlington, VA, head down the path on the Gulf Branch Trail. Walk northeast for roughly a quarter mile, where you will intersect with the Potomac River. Find a spot along the sand, cast out, and watch the catfish bite! Chicken liver seems to work well.
Don't forget to have an active fishing license for Virginia.
Visit Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens
The Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens are a unique spot in Washington, D.C. The grounds are full of ponds, boardwalks, and a trail that connects you to the Anacostia River Trail. The main draw of this park are the ponds full of lotus flowers. During the summer months, they grow tall with colors ranging from white to deep pink. In other ponds, there are white, pink, and purple water lilies. One of the ...
Mt. Vernon Trail
Start your adventure at the Teddy Roosevelt Island parking area and head southbound towards Mt. Vernon. You'll be riding next to the Potomac the entire time, with great views of the National Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, and the Memorial Bridge. The ride is as long as you want to make it, but a great ride is to Old Town Alexandria and back (14 miles total)! You can stop for lu...
