Kayak the Allagash Wilderness Waterway

Northwest Piscataquis, Maine

Description

Added by Meagan Benevides

This is an absolutely breathtaking adventure that will bring you very close to nature. You can choose to make this trip take as long as you want and really make it your own.

The Allagash Wilderness Waterway is a 92 mile long Waterway in Northern Maine. You can choose to begin wherever you like, but my husband and myself choose to start at Churchill Dam. It is here that you can either run the rapids (class II or III) or you can pay a ranger $10 to portage you around. We choose to pay the fee and go around. Once around you will paddle for about an hour until you reach Umsaskis Lake. There are campgrounds here where you can choose to stay or keep paddling around. Once you pass Umsaskis you will paddle into Long Lake and then into Round Pond. We found an amazing and very secluded campsite all the way on the other side of the pond called Squirrel pocket. Each campsite has a fire pit and a picnic table already set up so all you have to do is find some wood to make a fire and you are good to go! After Round Pond you will paddle to Allagash Falls (a 40 foot waterfall that you have to portage around). Once you get past the waterfall it is another 3 hour paddle to the ending point at Allagash Village. You can either paddle straight through or there are many campsites along the way you can stop and rest at. The Allagash Wilderness Waterway is an amazing trip that you bring you extremely close to nature. We not only saw a bald eagle land directly beside us on a tree, but we were also lucky to see a Moose majestically cross the river in front of us.
