Redwood Cottage
Occidental, California
Shanti Permaculture Farm... A place of peace without either light or noise pollution. Where the only disturbance as you thrill to a breathtakingly starry night sky is the croaking of frogs in the farm pond.
Now, this is nature at its best! In ancient Sanskrit, Shanti means peace or peaceful. Peace is just what you'll find here at the Redwood Cottage. Nestled among old-growth redwoods, this charming cottage is the perfect place to relax and unwind from a stressful lifestyle.
You may want to start your day on our working farm by visiting with the chickens, ducks, geese, Blackbelly sheep, and (of course!) Cosmo the llama. If you'd like to feed them, Elizabeth will be happy to help. Maybe your idea of a 'working' farm is throwing endless sticks into the pond for Libby and Lucy, Elizabeth's energetic Field Spaniels, to retrieve. Or you might want to spend an entire day lolling in the hammock in your private backyard. Well, that's okay, too! You're free to find the peace and relaxation that works for you while you're a guest at Shanti.
'Scenic' hardly describes the beauty that surrounds you in one of California's loveliest locations. The Grove of the Old Trees is only a two-mile walk from Shanti, and the Willow Creek Nature preserve is a little farther. There are stunning views of Mount Saint Helena and the Mayacamas Mountains. However, the highlight of the area is the 8-mile drive from Shanti to the ocean.
The spectacular and panoramic drive features a varied landscape of Douglas firs, redwoods, and oaks punctuated by quiet meadows and massive boulders. You may think that is beautiful enough but wait until the coastal fog parts and reveal the endless expansiveness of the Pacific Ocean. Breathtaking! The 35-minute drive frequently takes longer as visitors stop often to try to capture the remarkable beauty via photos.
At Shanti, we consider it essential to embrace as many environmentally friendly practices as possible. That's why we garden organically and farm using permaculture agricultural techniques. Ask Elizabeth if you'd like to know more. We also compost, recycle, conserve water and use non-toxic and recycled products whenever possible.
Welcome to the Redwood Cottage, your private refuge of peace, quiet, and relaxation beneath towering redwoods.
