This is an incredible, 2 day guided summit of Mt. Shasta in Northern California. There are a day of general hiking/mountaineering, followed by a 4am wake up call for a 7-hour summit day. It's highly recommended to hire a guide from one of three licesced companies: www.shastaguides.comwww.swmtns.comwww.alpineskills.com
Starting at 6,900', hikers begin at the Bunny Flat Trailhead. From there they hike 2 miles to Horse Camp (7,900' ), a popular day hike that ends at a Sierra Club lodge. Then continue up a more difficult route called Avalanche Gulley, to Helen Lake (10,400'). Set up tents, take some pictures, and have a good dinner before hitting the sleeping bag at around 8pm. Wakeup call the next morning is 3:30am, and be ready to hit the trail by 4:00. Hike for 3-4 hours past The Heart, and up to Red Banks (12,960'), where you'll rest before tackling Heartbreak Hill, crossing the summit plateau, and climbing the last 1000 feet. You'll be rewarded with spectacular views of the Whitney Glacier and Shastina, along with Mt. Hood and the surrounding area.
