Adventure Doesn't Have to Be Grand

One thing I have noticed is that people tend to have a grandiose image of what adventure really is. It's time to find out what adventure really means.

In the day and age of Instagram, adventure, for some, has become unobtainable. We watch people as they adventure around the world, scale the highest peaks, soak in the sun on remote beaches that can only be reached by skydiving from 10,000 feet. A lot of us ask ourselves "how on earth can I be an adventurer when that's what adventure is?" Luckily, adventure doesn't have to be grand. Here are three steps to help you realize that you too can be an adventurer.

1. Yes, you have enough time

The biggest excuse I hear from people is that they don't have the time. There is too much work, too many commitments, or my family keeps me busy. I'm not doubting your life is busy, but adventure doesn't have to take long. Make the most of a few spare hours in the evening. Find a hike on your way home from work and all of a sudden you are an adventurer! Or find a building in your city that you can get to the top of to watch a sunset. What do you know, you're on an adventure! Most of us have the time to set a few hours aside to adventure.

2. Yes, there are adventures near you

The next biggest excuse I hear is that people don't live in a cool enough place to adventure. This is a mindset problem, not a location problem. Stop exaggerating what adventure is and see it for what it really is. Adventure is getting out and seeing or doing something new. It's doing something that's outside of your normal routine. It doesn't require mountains, exotic landscapes, or foreign cities. It just requires you to get out and search for something new to do.

3. Yes, your adventures are awesome too

It's hard not to get sucked into feeling like your adventures aren't as cool as everyone else's. Here's the thing though, if you are adventuring to be the "coolest adventurer" you are doing it wrong. Don't compare your adventures to others, and stop feeling like there are certain things you need to be doing to be on an "awesome adventure." Get out there and adventure in a way that makes you happy. Find adventures that you love, and that will make your adventure awesome.

Adventure is out there, surrounding you, and waiting for you to come and find it. Stop glamorizing what adventure really is and get out and explore the places around you!
